Getting ready for your biometrics appointment

nb editorial 05

Once you receive biometrics instructions, read the letter carefully. Keep it handy while booking and preparing for the appointment.

Use the current letter

Where biometrics are required, IRCC’s process involves the fee, a biometric instruction letter (BIL) and an in-person visit to an official collection site. Follow the letter for your current application. An old letter from a previous application is not something to rely on.

Book through the official site

Check the collection location and its appointment instructions. IRCC says booking a biometrics appointment is free. Be careful if someone contacts you offering a special appointment for a fee.

Prepare a small folder

Check which identification and letter to bring, the address and any local instructions. Put these together before the day of the appointment. Read IRCC’s guidance about the photograph and fingerprints, including keeping your face visible and your hands ready to be scanned. Keep a record of the appointment with your application papers.
