Family sponsorship may allow an eligible sponsor to help certain family members become permanent residents. Both the sponsor and the person being sponsored must meet the requirements for the relevant category.
The relationship, supporting documents and sponsorship obligations all matter. Start by identifying the correct category; a rule that applies to a spouse does not necessarily apply to a parent, adopted child or another relative.
This category covers qualifying spouses, common-law or conjugal partners, and dependent children. The relationship and the sponsor’s eligibility must be supported by the required evidence.
This program has its own intake process and sponsorship requirements. As of October 9, 2026, IRCC lists the intake as paused; it is different from a temporary visit under a super visa.
An eligible sponsor may sponsor an adopted child for permanent residence, subject to immigration and adoption requirements. The citizenship process for an adopted child is a separate route.
Sponsorship of other relatives is available only in specific circumstances. A family connection alone does not mean that a relative is eligible to be sponsored.
