Visitor status extension — visitor record
A visitor record is used to extend an authorized stay in Canada. It is not a visitor visa and does not by itself authorize re-entry after travel.

An approaching expiry date is a good time to check exactly which document or status needs attention. A visitor visa, visitor record, study permit, work permit and permanent resident card have different purposes.
Use the correct application for your situation and review the timing and eligibility before submitting. Extending permission to stay in Canada is different from obtaining a travel document to return after a trip.

Eligible workers may apply to extend a work permit or change its conditions. The requirements depend on the type of permit and the proposed employment.
Students who need more time to complete their studies may need to extend their study permit. This is a study permit extension, rather than a “student visa renewal.”
Permanent residents can apply for a new PR card when renewal is needed, subject to the applicable requirements. An expired PR card does not, by itself, mean that permanent resident status has been lost.
