Where to start with family sponsorship

nb editorial 16

When you want to bring family together in Canada, it helps to begin with the right sponsorship category. The relationship determines which instructions you need.

Choose the relevant guide

IRCC has a program for sponsoring a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner or dependent child for permanent residence. Other family relationships follow different instructions. Do not use a checklist just because it worked for another family.

Look at both applicants’ requirements

The sponsor has responsibilities and eligibility conditions. The person being sponsored has requirements too. Read both parts of the guide before spending time gathering evidence. The relationship alone does not settle eligibility.

Tell the story accurately

Put the relationship dates in order and gather the civil-status records requested in the guide. Check names, dates and family details across the documents. If something is missing or inconsistent, address it honestly using the relevant instructions. Keep your questions in one place, including any requirements for the intended province of residence. This makes it easier to see where you need advice.
