Do your immigration documents need translating?

nb editorial 08

Before ordering a translation, check what your application guide asks for. The translation may need supporting certification too.

Start with the language

Unless IRCC tells you otherwise, supporting documents must be in English or French. If yours are in another language, read the instructions for the application you are preparing. A translation by itself may not meet them.

Ask about certification before you pay

IRCC’s general guidance refers to a translation, an affidavit from the translator and a certified photocopy of the original. Some guides give more specific directions, including for certified translations. Show those requirements to the translation provider before ordering the work.

Read the documents side by side

Check names, dates, document numbers and stamps against the original. Include every required page and reverse side. Keep the original, translation and certification together so nothing gets left behind when you upload. If two records disagree, investigate the difference. Do not alter the original to make it match.
