Waiting for an IRCC decision

nb editorial 10

Waiting can be difficult, especially when study, work or travel plans depend on the answer. Processing estimates can help you plan, but they are not a promised decision date.

Check the right category

Use IRCC’s processing-time tool and select the application type and location that apply to you. A time quoted by a friend may be for a different application or may already be out of date.

Leave room for the estimate to change

The time needed can depend on the application, whether it is complete and what information needs checking. A complex file or a request for more information may affect the wait. Keep some flexibility in your plans where possible.

Keep track of what you can do

Save your submission confirmation and check the correct account for messages. If IRCC asks for a document, read the request carefully, respond as instructed and keep proof. The processing-time tool does not show what is happening in your particular file. Use the application-status instructions for that question.
