Travelling outside Canada as a permanent resident

nb editorial 13

Before you leave Canada, check the documents you will need for the journey home. The return trip deserves the same attention as the departure.

Look at your PR card now

Permanent residents returning by a commercial carrier normally need a valid PR card or a permanent resident travel document (PRTD), along with the appropriate travel document. Check the card’s expiry date against your intended return.

If you do not have a valid card

IRCC says a permanent resident outside Canada without a valid PR card showing their status may apply for a PRTD when returning by airplane, boat, train or bus. The application and evidence still need to be assessed. A PRTD is not issued automatically simply because you ask for one.

Plan before committing to travel

Check your passport, PR card and route. If your card is missing or will expire before your return, read the PRTD instructions before making commitments. Keep your travel history and relevant records available. Where the circumstances are complicated, getting advice before departure is much easier than trying to resolve everything at the airport.
