Before choosing a Canadian college or university

An admission offer is exciting. Before paying a deposit, check the school and the exact program against your study and immigration plans.

Check the school and campus

A designated learning institution, or DLI, is a school approved by a province or territory to host international students. IRCC maintains the post-secondary DLI list. Check the campus you will attend, not just the name on the brochure. Save its DLI number with your admission documents.

What happens after graduation?

DLI status does not mean every program at that school is eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). If working after graduation is part of your plan, check the program’s eligibility and the current PGWP requirements separately. Your acceptance letter does not answer all of these questions.

Make the decision with the full picture

Compare the offer with the official listing and ask the school about any mismatch. Consider tuition, living costs and what you want to study. Keep a dated record of what you checked and review it before applying. A little care now can help you make a better-informed choice.
