Want to stay in Canada longer as a visitor? Start by checking which document you need. A visitor record and a visitor visa are not the same.
Staying longer
IRCC directs visitors who want to extend their stay to apply for a visitor record. It deals with your stay in Canada. Calling it a visa can lead you to the wrong application, so take a moment to read the instructions before gathering documents.
Planning to leave and return?
An extension of your stay does not settle the separate question of travel back to Canada. Review IRCC’s travel instructions for temporary residents if you are planning a trip outside the country. Do not assume your visitor record covers re-entry.
Keep the dates in one place
Write down when your authorized stay ends, the dates on your travel documents and why you want to remain longer. Check when IRCC tells you to apply. Keep a copy of your submission and any messages you receive. If travel is part of your plan, check that too before you leave.
