Challenges and Disadvantages of OCI Status  

Cost of getting an OCI

As India doesn’t allow dual citizenship, the first step after obtaining Canadian citizenship is to Surrender⁴ Indian citizenship. The cost of surrendering is around CAD $130 (Year 2023). You can only apply for the OCI status once you get the surrender certificate. OCI doesn’t come cheap. It is CAD $345 (Year 2023) per person. Stationary and postage is extra. Many a times the application is sent back due to minor errors, which make the process even more costlier. To avoid the high costs, I would suggest reading through the application guide⁵ issued by your jurisdiction very carefully.

Limited Political Rights

OCI holders do not have the right to vote in Indian elections, limiting their participation in the democratic process of their home country.
